After Pakistan suffered a humiliating defeat against England by an innings and 47 runs in the first Test in Multan, the captaincy reign of Shan Masood is reportedly under threat. It is understood that the national selection committee will take a call on Shan Masood’s future as captain of the Pakistan cricket team, following which they are expected to announce the name of his replacement for the future Test assignments.
Notably, in the morning session on day five, Pakistan were bundled out for just 220 runs in their second innings at the Multan Cricket Stadium after trailing England by 267 runs in the first innings, to suffer a loss of epic proportions. After scoring a massive first innings score of 556 runs in 149 overs, the Pakistan cricket team conceded the fourth highest Test team total in history as the visitors scored 823/7 declared.
Pakistan have suffered six consecutive losses in Test cricket under Shan Masood’s captaincy
In recent times, Pakistan have suffered six consecutive losses in Test cricket under Shan Masood’s captaincy, which has put his leadership reign in all sorts of trouble. According to the report in Geo News, after the national selection committee takes the call to potentially remove the 34-year-old from captaincy, he will be replaced in the role by either Mohammad Rizwan or Salman Ali Agha since both of them have been consistent performers with the bat amidst the poor performances from the Pakistan Test team.
Pakistan are going to play their next Test series in South Africa at the turn of the year, so the potential change at the helm will be seen there in all likelihood. Before that, Abrar Ahmed, who was hospitalised during the first Test in Multan due to fever, could get left out of the squad for the second Test squad for either Zahid Mahmood or Nouman Ali, while Kamran Ghulam and Imam-ul-Haq are also expected to feature in it.
