Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is set to return to the Indian men's senior team for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. Alongside Iyer, upcoming stars like Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav and other s are slated to be part of the tour to Zimbabwe which kicks off on July 6.
Iyer was removed from BCCI's central contracts for ignoring domestic cricket to focus on the IPL. The Mumbai native was also dropped from the Test series against England after two matches. The 29-year-old then played for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy knockout and even scored a 95 in the final to help his side lift their 42nd title. The Mumbai native then led this IPL side, Kolkata Knight Riders, to their 3rd title.
Talking about Iyer and other Indian rising stars, PTI quoted a BCCI source revealing that the KKR skipper is in contention to play for India against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. The report said, "Shreyas is currently not at NCA. Here mostly those players are there, who have performed in the IPL and will be in contention for Zimbabwe selection. Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav, Harshit Rana, Nitish Reddy, Vijaykumar Vyshak and Yash Dayal are all at the camp. Some will go to Zimbabwe T20Is."
"However, there is every possibility that Shreyas will travel for the three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka. The last ODI that India played was in South Africa and he scored a half-century (52). He had 500 plus runs (530) in the World Cup and averages just around 50. Can you drop him?" the source added.
Immediately after the T20 World Cup, the Men in Blue will be playing Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in two white-ball bilateral series. Team India will face the Chevrons in five T20Is series in Harare from July 6 to July 14. Then, the Indian team will travel to Sri Lanka for three ODIs and three T20Is in July 2024.
