Former BCCI Chief and India batter Sourav Ganguly is likely to replace Ricky Ponting as the coach of Delhi Capitals in the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League. Ganguly is currently the director of the National Capital-based franchise in the famous cash-rich tournament. Former Australia captain Ponting has been in the coaching role of DC since 2018, and the team had the worst season as they finished last in the 2023’s IPL.

According to the reports by Sangbad Pratidin, a Bengali media outlet, Ganguly will take up the role of the coach next year. The Southpaw was the mentor of the IPL franchise in the 2019 and 2020 seasons and enjoyed a bit of success in the role as DC reached the playoffs in those seasons. The team was coached by Ricky Ponting at that time and was led by Shreyas Iyer.

Reports further suggested that Ponting has discussed about parting ways from the franchise with a few close individuals. However, there hasn’t been any official confirmation from any side yet.

Speaking about DC’s performance in the IPL 2023, the team managed to win only five of their fixtures and opened their winning account in their fifth match. The team was led by David Warner and ended up becoming the first team to get out of the qualifying race. The team’s director, Sourav Ganguly, has donned several hats after calling it quits on his international career in 2022. However, if the reports are true, it will be for the first time that the Indian commentator will explore the role of a coach.
