The South Africa cricket board, Cricket South Africa, shared an update on skipper Temba Bavuma’s injury. Bavuma sustained a hamstring injury on the first day of the Centurion Test against India. The Proteas skipper was forced to leave the field within 20 overs of the game after suffering a strain on his left hamstring in the first session of the Boxing Day Test. Dean Elgar, who is playing his final Test series, stepped up for the captaincy role after Bavuma was sent for a medical scan.

South African board had earlier shared an update about his injury and said, Bavuma will "undergo daily medical evaluations to determine" if he will play any further role in the match. Recently, Cricket South Africa shared the latest update and said it was risky for the cricketer to bat in the first innings. The statement further read that the medical team is trying to give him the chance to bat in the fourth innings, which is subject to requirement.

Cricket South Africa’s statement read, “Following continuous medical assessments, it was determined that there was too much of a risk of aggravating his left hamstring injury had he gone out to bat at this stage of the game. The medical team are managing him to give him the best chance to bat should he be required in the 4th innings.”

The incident took place when Bavuma was fielding at mid-off when Virat Kohli drove Marco Jansen through extra cover and he gave chase. Bavuma chased the ball off, and though he managed to stop the ball, he injured his left hamstring while doing so. He received treatment on the field and then left unaided. Elgar, the former Test captain, took over the leadership duties in the absence of Bavuma.
