Sri Lankan superfan Percy Abeysekera aka Uncle Percy has passed away after a prolonged illness. The 87-year-old Sri Lankan followed the game since his childhood and was a hardcore fan of his national team. Uncle Percy was first seen supporting the Sri Lankan team in the 1979 World Cup and has been with the team ever since.

During the recent Asia Cup, Indian captain Rohit Sharma paid  Uncle Percy a visit with another super fan  Gayan Senanayake.  Similarly, Abeysekera was invited into the Indian dressing room in 2015 after Day 3 of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo. 

Coming back to this sad news, Sri Lankan cricket great Sanath  Sanath Jayasuriya expressed his condolences to Uncle Percy and his family through a tweet.  Jayasuriya had posted,  "It is with great sadness that I heard our beloved Uncle Percy has met his maker. You were the first superfan and for all of us you will always be special RIP"

Recently,  Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has presented Rs. 5 million to Uncle Percy Abeysekara for his health and well-being.  Sri Lankan commentator Roshan Abeysinghe shared a photo of SLC Secretary Mohan de Silva presenting Abeysakara with the cheque.

Abeysinghe had posted, " Sri Lanka Cricket presented Rs.5mn to Mr. Percy Abeysekera to assist him in his well-being and maintenance of his health. Great gesture indeed."
