India’s T20I captain and middle-order batter, Suryakumar Yadav suffered a massive blow as he sustained a hand injury while fielding for Mumbai in the team’s match against Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) XI in the ongoing Buchi Babu tournament. However, the extent of the injury is still unknown, it seems to be a concern with the Duleep Trophy and the Bangladesh tour coming ahead.
The 33-year-old Indian batter’s stay on the field lasted for only 38 balls of the innings. Although, with the extent of injury unknown, it is to be seen if he will be available to play in the upcoming Duleep Trophy, which is set to get underway from September 5. On the other hand, speaking of the match between Mumbai and TNCA XI, the former had a forgettable day as they scored just 156 runs in reply to Tamil Nadu’s 379. After the TNCA XI added 286 runs to their total with Mumbai needing 510 runs to win.
Suryakumar Yadav eyes Test comeback after Buchi Babu tournament and Duleep Trophy
The white-ball star, Suryakumar has notably played only one Test, which came against Australia in Nagpur in February 2023. However, he did not have a great outing as he scored only eight runs with India securing a comfortable win by an inning and 132 runs. Despite rare performance in the longest format, Suryakumar Yadav has his eyes set on his return in Test cricket.
“What is in my power right now is to play Buchi Babu tournament, go on to play the Duleep Trophy and then see what happens,” he had said earlier. “But, yes, I’m really looking forward. There are ten Test matches lined up (in India’s international season at home) and I’m obviously excited for some red-ball fun,” Suryakumar Yadav further added.
The Rohit Sharma-led Team India is set to host Bangladesh in a two-match Test series from September 19. While the first Test will be played from September 19 till September 23 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the second Test is scheduled to start from September 27 at the Green Park in Kanpur. After the conclusion of the two-match Test series, Indian will lock horns with Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series.
