The ODI World Cup 2023 might be over with Australia lifting their sixth World Champions title after beating the hosts by six wickets in the grand finale at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the emotions of several players continue to pour in. While the Indian dressing room had tears after a heartbreaking loss against the Aussies, despite coming into the game on a 10-match unbeaten streak, England all-rounder Ben Stokes also took to social media to share a post, but with a heavy heart.
The English all-rounder, who came out of ODI retirement just before the CWC 2023, did not have the best of his outings, nor did his team have one as they were the first to get eliminated from the title clash. But as the spirit of the game calls for, Ben Stokes took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate the Pat Cummins-led side for their title triumph.
“Taken me a while to type this with gritted teeth. Congrats to Pat Cummins and his Australia team on winning the World Cup, after 8 weeks of hard fought cricket there is nothing better than lifting that trophy at the end of it”, he wrote.
However, the Three Lions might not have put up the performance they are often reckoned for, but two consecutive wins in the final two league games ensured them a place in Champions Trophy 2025, set to be held in Pakistan.
