Tamil Nadu’s Congress MP R Sudha wrote a letter to the Prime Minister and urged him to waive off the tax on newly crowned World Chess Champion D Gukesh’s prize money. Notably, earlier this month, 18-year-old Gukesh scripted history as he became the youngest World Champion by defeating Ding Liren. The youngster received a heavy sum of INR 11.45 Crore as prize money. However, his earnings were soon hit with India’s taxation rules as Gukesh was required to pay a sum of nearly INR 4.09 Crore, leaving him with INR 7.36 Crore in hand.
However, recently an MP from Tamil Nadu urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to waive off tax from Gukesh's prize money. She drew attention to previous instances where notable sports personalities including Sachin Tendulkar and Ravi Shastri, who were granted exemption from paying taxes on their earnings from sporting milestones and achievements. Not only this, but the TN MP also appealed for a cash award from the Union government to further honour the young chess champion.
He will never be a player like Magnus Carlsen: D Gukesh’s trainer Grzegorz Gajewski
After D Gukesh’s win drew criticism from several names including Magnus Carlsen, the Indian Grandmaster’s chief trainer Grzegorz Gajewski decided to compare him to Carlsen. He told The Hindu, “He will never be a player like Magnus Carlsen in the sense of being an intuitive kind of a player.” Gajewski added, “He likes to calculate and he likes to go deep into position. He doesn’t like to make moves just purely based on intuition. He will never play in the Magnus style, but he can very well mimic it.”
Gajewski was asked if Gukesh is one of the best when it comes to calculations in chess, he said, “Vishy [Anand]. In terms of talent for calculation, perhaps no one in the history of the game could match him. But at the same time, he was so fast that sometimes it became his weakness. Gukesh somewhat resembles a young Fabiano Caruana.”
