With less than two months left for the ODI World Cup 2023, all the teams are trying in to field their best XI in the marquee event. But it seems that the Men in Blue along with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has a few questions to answer before they finally name their 15-member squad.

With KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah all in line to be fit for the ODI World Cup in India, the Rohit Sharma-led side needs to fix their middle order to put their best foot forward. Amid all this, Indian veteran Ravichandran Ashwin feels that latest batting sensation Tilak Varma can be someone to look upto.

Verma, who made his debut for Team India in the first T20I against West Indies and is among the top scorers for the side in the ongoing five-match T20I series, went on to smash his maiden half-century in just his second match.

Talking about Ashwin’s stance on Varma, the Indian off-spinner feels, “The emergence of Tilak Varma has made everyone take notice of him. He looked in imperous touch even on that slow pitch in 1 st  T20I. His batting style is very unlike for an Indian making his international debut. His game resembles a lot like Rohit Sharma. He sweats on the pull shot.”

He also added, “This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don’t have enough backups?” Ashwin  even went onto say, “Tilak Varma is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers.”

No space for him in top 4: Ashwin on Sanju Samson

Indian all-rounder R Ashwin even spoke about wicketkeeper-batter Sanju samson. Adding that Sanju can change the course of the game at any point, Ashwin said, “There is no space for him in the top 4. Whether there will be a spot for him after the World Cup or after one or two years after the World Cup, we will have to wait and watch.”
