South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and invited India to bat first as the hosts dismissed the Indian top-order including skipper Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill in 12 overs.

After Virat Kohli (38) and Shreyas Iyer (31) combined for 68 runs for the fourth wicket, it was KL Rahul who played the role of an anchor in India's innings. KL Rahul came to bat at no.5 when India were at 92 runs and completed his 14th Test half-century with a spectacular six over the deep third.
