Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna restated his retirement from International Tennis after losing in the first round of the Men's Doubles event at the Paris Olympics 2024. Bopanna has been one of the best tennis players and won the Australian Open earlier in the year alongside Australian Mathew Ebden before being the World Number One.
The 44-year-old represented India at various events over 22 years and had already announced retirement from the Davis Cup. Now at the Summer Games, Bopanna and N Sriram Balaji lost to the French duo of Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Gael Monfils 7-5, 6-2 in straight sets. After that result, Bopanna reiterated his retirement from International Tennis while speaking to PTI.
This will definitely go down as my last event for the country: Bopanna
He said, "This will definitely go down as my last event for the country. I totally understand where I am and now, I am just going to be enjoying the tennis circuit as long as that goes. This is already a big bonus for where I am. I never even thought that I'll be representing India for two decades. Right from 2002, making my debut and 22 years later still getting to represent India. I'm extremely proud of that."
Reflecting on his career, Bopanna deemed his fifth-rubber win against Ricardo Mello in the Davis Cup tie against Brazil as his top moment while playing for India. He said, " That is definitely the one in Davis Cup history. That is by far my best moment, no question that that one in Chennai and then winning that five-setter doubles in Bangalore against Serbia."
