Tottenham Hotspur agreed an initial loan for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner. Both clubs have reportedly agreed to a deal which, alongside the loan, will have an option to buy speculated around €15-20 million. Werner was playing in the Premier League for cross-town rivals Chelsea before joining his former side RB Leipzig ahead of the 2022-23 season.
The development reported by the Athletic stated that the clubs were finalising a move for Werner to initially join Spurs until the end of the 2023-24 season. The report further claims that Tottenham will cover Werner’s full salary for the remainder of the 2023-24 season and that the 27-year-old will undergo a medical as soon as possible.
RB Leipzig confirmed on Saturday that Werner would miss the friendly against St Gallen due to his transfer negotiations. Similarly, fellow Premier League Manchester United were also eyeing Werner.
After a breakout season in the Bundesliga, Werner left RB Leipzig for Chelsea for £47.5 million in 2020. But the German forward failed to replicate his prolific goalscoring form and struggled to become a regular player in the playing XI. Werner scored 23 goals in 89 appearances for the Blues while winning the UEFA Champion League in 2021.
But after two underwhelming years, Werner returned to RB Leipzig in the summer of 2022. Talking about this season, the German forward has made 14 appearances for RB Leipzig where he has scored two goals and recorded one assist.
