Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo who collapsed on the pitch after suffering an irregular heartbeat, passed away on Wednesday, August 28. The 27-year-old footballer, who played for Club Nacional, suffered a collapse during a Copa Libertadores match against Sao Paulo on August 22. During the 84th minute of the game, the young footballer had suddenly fallen on the ground, and had been undergoing treatment since then.
However, Izquierdo breathed his last on Wednesday, as announced by the club on their social media. The club wrote on X, “It is with the deepest sorrow and shock in our hearts that the Club Nacional announces the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo. We express our most sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and loved ones. All of Nacional is in mourning for his irreparable loss.”
After his collapse on Thursday, he was taken to the hospital and as per the statement late on Tuesday, Izquierdo had “cardiorespiratory arrest associated with his cardiac arrhythmia.” The doctors at the hospital said that in a statement on Monday that the late footballer was experiencing increased intracranial pressure and had been on a ventilator since Sunday.
Notably, Izquierdo had replaced Sebastian Coates for the club at half-time of the match against Sao Paulo but fell to the ground. His professional career began in 2018 at local club Cerro and joined Penarol the following year. He then moved to Montevideo Wanderers before he was signed by Nacional in 2022. The defender was then transferred to the local Liverpool club and emerged as the side’s one of the best players in the campaign.
