Victor Wembanyama is expected to remain absent from San Antonio Spurs’ camp for the remainder of the NBA 2024-25 season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. Victor’s team, Spurs said that the star basketball player learnt about the condition after he returned to San Antonio after the All-Star contest in San Francisco on February 17. Wembanyama has averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in his 46 outings this season.
His ailing condition will now keep him away from All-NBA, Defensive Player of the Year, and other awards as he won’t reach the league’s 65-game minimum criteria. Back in 2023, the youngster was the NBA's number-one draft pick. He also broke into the record books for becoming the second European player to be selected with the top pick. Victor’s disease has given shock waves to several folks associated with the NBA.
“It’s a little bit of shock. As a fan of the game, you never want to see anybody, any player but especially a great player, the future of this league be shut down for the remaining season. So, you hate to see that happen to anybody. And hopefully Wemby is going to be OK,” said the Denver Nuggets’ coach Michael Malone.
Spurs are unlikely to feature in NBA playoffs
San Antonio Spurs are placed in the Western Conference group where they are currently in the 12th spot on the points tally with only 24 wins and 29 losses. The team won their last game against Phoenix Suns by 120-109 scores at Moody Center on February 20. Their next clash will be against the Detroit Pistons on February 22.
If Spurs qualify for the playoffs, Victor might join them but the current scenario indicates the team’s chances are extremely low as they not only have to win their further matches but also have to rely on the fate of other sides in the competition.
