Brazilian star Vinicius Jr. has been subjected to racism several times in European competitions and one such incident took place in a game that the Real Madrid forward was not even playing. Ahead of Atletico de Madrid and Inter Milan's Round of 16 clash at the Civitas Metropolitan Stadium on Wednesday night, the home fans made racist chants against the 23-year-old Brazilian, who urged the UEFA to punish them.
Atleti came back from a 1-0 loss against Inter at the San Siro in the first leg and conceded a goal in the 33rd minute to trail by two goals. However, Antonie Griezmann and Memphis Depay forced the game into the penalties, where they defeated the Italian giants by 3-2.
Ahead of the UCL RO16 fixture in Madrid, Atleti fans raised racist slogans targeting Real Madrid star Vinicius. The fans chanted, "'Alé Alé, Alé, Vinícius chimpanzee", and a video of the same has gone viral on social media. The video also grabbed the Brazilian forward's attention, who hoped that the UEFA had "already thought about their punishment."
He wrote, "I hope you have already thought about their punishment. @ChampionsLeague 👍🏿 @UEFA 👍🏿it's a sad reality that even happens in games where I'm not present!"
LaLiga files complaint over racist chants against Vinicius
After the Atleti fans raised racist chants against Vinicius, La Liga claimed to take strict action against the offenders. The Spanish league said that it would file a complaint with the Spanish prosecutors' office over the deplorable racist chants.
"LaLiga is very committed to ensuring that football is a space free of hate and will continue to relentlessly pursue any attitude of racism, homophobia, violence and hatred," LaLiga told ESPN.
