The Big Bash League 2023-24 was witness to a hilarious moment during the Melbourne Stars-Sydney Sixers at the MCG involving the third umpire. Sixers registered a comfortable seven-wicket win after chasing down 160 in 18.1 overs. But in this chase, the TV umpire had a glaring error as he pushed the wrong button after reviewing a straight-forward run-out.

The incident occurred in the third over of the Sydney Sixers’ innings when James Vince smashed bowler Imad Wasim straight down the ground. But as the Pakistan left-arm spinner tried to stop the ball, it hit his hand and went on to crash into  the stumps.

With Non-striker Josh Phillipe rushing back into the crease, the decision went to the third umpire. Immediately, it was clear that  Phillipe  made his ground but the big screen at the MCG displayed the Aussie batter was out. With everyone in shock, the on-field umpire calmed the situation down as the TV umpire had pressed the wrong button. The correct decision was eventually made as Phillipe was called not out.

After this mishap, Phillipe got out at a score of nine in eight balls. James Vince and Daniel Hughes stitched up a massive stand to ensure the Sixers of the win. Hughes scored 41 in 32 balls while Vince smashed an incredible 57-ball 79 before Moises Henriques and Jordan Silk finished off the game.

Vince was named the Player of the Match and thanked the bowlers for restricting the Stars to 155. The Englishman said,  "I think the bowlers did a fantastic job. I think restricting them to 155 was a great effort from the bowlers. Was a kind of a wicket where we didn't want the required run rate to get soaring high. 12-13 runs per over at the back end would have been tough."

"Would like to get a few more runs in this competition. It was nice to spend some time in the middle. You want to peak at the back end of the competition. Hopefully, we save our best cricket for the back end. We don't play until next Friday, and then we have a game on Sunday, hopefully, we have saved our best for the finals."
