Saudi Arabia produced the biggest upset of the FIFA World Cup 2022 as they defeated tournament favorites Argentina on Tuesday. In the Group C opener between the Copa America champions and Saudi Arabia, seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi opened the scoring for his team in the 10th minute.

Argentina began the first half with a dominating performance as Leo Messi found the back of the net in the starting 10 minutes into the game while he scored another goal in the 22nd minute, which was disallowed due to offside. Messi scored the first goal from penalty and took his overall FIFA World Cup 2022 goal scoring tally to seven goals equaling arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal.

However, Saudi Arabia came from behind and scored two goals to mark their fourth victory in the history of FIFA World Cup. With the win, Saudi Arabia also broke Argentina's record 36-game unbeaten streak in the FIFA World Cup 2022 opener.
In other Group C match, Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa saved Robert Lewandowski's penalty to force a draw against Poland. After playing a match each, Saudi Arabia are at the top of the group with three points followed by Mexico and Poland with a point each. Argentina are placed at the bottom with 0 points.
