Mohammed Shami, the Indian fast bowler, made a comeback to professional cricket in Ranji Trophy for Bengal after being on the sidelines for the better part of a year due to injury. The 34-year-old, who picked up seven wickets in a narrow win by 11 runs for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh, is reportedly going to join Team India for the upcoming five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test series alongside captain Rohit Sharma, who is currently in Mumbai after the birth of his second child.

With the first Test between India and Australia in the BGT set to begin on Friday, November 22, at the Optus Stadium in Perth, a report from Dainik Bhaskar claimed that he and Rohit Sharma could join the team ahead of the game. But, at the same time, they also claimed the decision surrounding the inclusion of Mohammed Shami in the Indian playing XI will happen only after the conclusion of the first Test.

Mohammed Shami picked final wicket for Bengal to secure a big win over Madhya Pradesh in Ranji Trophy

In his comeback game at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, Mohammed Shami bowled 43.2 overs for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh, taking seven wickets including four in the first innings, followed by three in the second innings. Madhya Pradesh were given a target of 338 to win the Elite Group C clash, but they were unable to get past the finishing line after being bundled out for 326 runs in the last innings of the contest.

Mohammed Shami, who steadily improved his rhythm and accuracy after bowling more overs in the Ranji Trophy clash, picked up the final wicket of Kumar Kartikeya, to seal the win for Bengal over Madhya Pradesh. With this important victory, their first one of the 2024-25 season in five games, Bengal climbed to third place in the Elite Group C points table with 14 points, just behind Haryana and Kerala in the standings.
