The captain of the Pakistan cricket team, Babar Azam threw his wicket away to a sweep shot after scoring a fifty in the ODI World Cup 2023 clash against South Africa. The 29-year-old, who has been heavily criticised for lack of big scores in the flagship tournament, wasn’t too pleased with the way he got dismissed on Friday, October 27, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

After bringing up his 50th fifty-plus score in ODIs, Babar Azam tried to put his foot on the accelerator for Pakistan against Tabraiz Shamsi, but in his attempt, he couldn’t execute the sweep shot to his liking. Quinton de Kock managed to grab hold of the ball, and the subsequent appeal from the South Africa player led to the captain Temba Bavuma opting for a DRS, which was proven to be successful.

Notably, Babar Azam has scored three fifties in the ODI World Cup 2023, but he has been unable to convert those 50s into 100s. The lack of big scores from Babar Azam is one of the few reasons why Pakistan are a couple of defeats away from exiting the quadrennial spectacle before the knockout stages.

In the ongoing match against South Africa, with their backs against the wall, Pakistan found a way to put 270 runs on the board, after getting bundled out inside 47 overs. Apart from the fifty from Babar Azam, the left-handed middle-order batter Saud Shakeel top scored with 52 at run-a-ball for the Men in Green, while Shadab Khan got a quick-fire 43 off 36 too.
