On Tuesday, August 20, Yuvraj Singh’s long-standing record of most runs in an over finally was put to rest with Samoa’s wicketkeeper-batter Darius Visser scoring 39 runs in an over during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional East Asia-Pacific Qualifier A match. Visser, who was playing for Samoa, smashed 39 runs against Vanuatu at the Garden Oval No. 2 in Apia, Samoa to etch his name in record books.

The moment took place during the Sub Regional match where he surpassed former India cricketer, Yuvraj Singh’s record of most runs in an over in men’s T20I. While he smashed six sixes in the over, he was helped with three no-balls from Vanuatu pacer, Nalin Nipiko to add 39 runs in the 15th over. It is to be noted that Yuvraj Singh’s record of 36 runs in an over came during India’s campaign in the T20 World Cup 2007. Singh smashed England’s Stuart Broad for six sixes and later, Kieron Pollard (2021), Nicholas Pooran (2024), Dipendra Singh Airee (2024) also joined his likes.

While Visser smashed sixes from the first three balls of Nipiko over, he then cleared the boundary on the fourth legal ball to bring up 100 runs for Samoa. Furthermore, a dot from Nipiko in the fifth delivery didn’t dampen Visser’s spirits as he smashed a six from the third no-ball and then finished with a six to break Singh’s record. With this feat, he also became the first player from Samoa to score a hundred in international cricket.

The 28-year-old knock included an impressive tally of 14 sixes, finishing just four away from the record for most sixes hit by a single batter in men’s T20I match. Moreover, his match-winning knock of 132 off 62 deliveries changed the tide of the game with Samoa securing their second win in the ongoing tournament.
