Defending champion of the US Open women’s singles, USA's Coco Gauff on Monday, September 2 (IST) crashed out of the ongoing major. The World No. 3 joined the likes of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz as she was ousted by Emma Navarro in the fourth-round match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
The defending champion had an error-strewn performance as she committee 19 double faults and 60 unforced errors to suffer a three-set defeat to the 13th seeded. Moreover, the 20-year-old’s exit from the US Open 2024 meant that Serena Williams continues to remain the last woman to successfully defend the title at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, a feat which she achieved in 2014.
Watch the moment when Coco Gauff was ousted by Emma Navarro:
Speaking after her defeat, Gauff said that she gave her all, but accepted her errors. “I gave it my all. Obviously, there were things execution-wise, where I was like, I wish I could serve better. I think if I did that, it would have been a different story,” she said. On the other hand, Emma Navarro, who will next take on Spain’s Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals expressed herself after her win over her compatriot. “I lost in the first round the last two years and now to be making the quarterfinals is pretty insane,” she said.
Speaking of the US Open 2024, World No. 3 ranked, Carlos Alcaraz was the first big name to make an exit from the tournament. A day after his elimination, the Serbian, Novak Djokovic joined him in the list of key players to make an exit from the US Open 2024.
