New Zealand cricketer Frances Mackay opted for a unique way of tossing in the Women’s Super Smash League. Mackay is leading Canterbury Magicians in the ongoing season and on January 11, they locked horns with Wellington Women. During the toss, the 33-year-old opted to throw instead of flip the coin and called for heads. However, Mackay lost the toss and her rival skipper Amelia Kerr opted to allow her side to bat first.
After the toss, she was asked the reason she threw the coin instead of throwing it. The official asked her, “That was an interesting toss of the coin. Where did it come from?” The all-rounder replied, “I just enjoy doing things differently. We haven’t had the rub of the green the way we would have liked in the last couple of games. So, change things up and see if it changes things in the rest of the day for us.”

Later in the game, Wellington skipper Amelia Kerr went on to play an unbeaten innings of 77 runs as her side posted an overall total of 154 runs with six wickets’ loss. Changing her toss’ style didn’t help Mackay, and she could only contribute nine runs while chasing the total. The Wellington skipper then went on to scalp five wickets and destroyed the rivals’ batting order, compelling them to surrender at 109 runs with nine wickets loss. The Amelia Kerr-led side went on to register a 47-run win.
As Amelia remained her side’s highest wicket-taker and run-scorer, Madeline Penna was the top scorer and wicket-taker with three wickets for Canterbury. Wellington Women will now lock horns with Central District Women on January 13, whereas Canterbury will be up against Northern District Women on January 18.
