On Sunday, March 9, Rohit Sharma-led Team India is taking on New Zealand in the summit clash of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. The Men in Blue are unbeaten in the tournament, the Kiwis on the other hand, have been handed only one loss which came in the final group stage match against India.
After winning the toss, the Kiwis posted a competitive total of 252 runs on the board in their stipulated 50 overs. With Rohit Sharma looking good for the Indian side from the start, the Kiwis got hold of Shubman Gill’s wicket, courtesy Glenn Phillips yet another gravity defying catch.

Mitchell Santner, who has been phenomenal for the Kiwis, came out to bowl the 19th over. With the Indian openers looking good, Shubman Gill drilled the drive towards the cover on the fourth delivery. Phillips, who was positioned close to the short covers, just produced a breath-taking flying catch with his left hand to give the Kiwis their first breakthrough.
The right-hander obliged with a full-fledged drive with a lot of lift with his body leaning back at an acute angle to pluck the ball out of a thin air. As a result, the Indian vice-captain had to depart after scoring 31 runs off 50 deliveries.

With this, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill stitched third highest opening stand for India in the Champions Trophy finals. Stitching a 104-run stand in Dubai, it sits third for India after Sourav Ganguly-Sachin Tendulkar’s 141-run stand (Nairobi - 2000) and Azhar Ali-Fakhar Zaman’s 128-run stand (London - 2017).
