Melbourne derby brought the best of Melbourne Stars as they registered their maiden victory of the season by crushing Melbourne Renegades in the 22nd match of the Women’s Big Bash League 2022 on October 29 at Eastern Oval. Great piece of bowling from Sophie Day and Annabel Sutherland along with incredible batting by Annabel Sutherland paved the way for a comprehensive victory for Melbourne Stars Women over Melbourne Renegades.
Meanwhile, Stars top-order batter Jemimah Rodrigues who failed to make a mark in the game with her bat, impressed everyone with her singing as she was seen playing guitar and singing 'Channa Mereya' while the team was returning to the hotel after winning the game. While Indian batter Rodrigues flaunted her singing skills on numerous occasions, she was also joined by the likes of Alice Capsey, Nicole Faltum and Tess Flintoff, who sang as well as the Indian cricketer.
The video of the same was posted by Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues as she was surprised to see how aptly Australian players sang a popular Hindi song. "Went a lil Desi with the Stars 🥰 How good are they at Bollywood songs?! 🤩 #ChannaMereya Also such a good win today!! We keep going," tweeted Jemimah Rodrigues. The video was also shared by IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals with a special caption for the Indian batter. "ek hi toh dil hai," wrote Rajasthan Royals via their official Twitter handle.
Speaking of the game, Melbourne Renegades could only manage to post 91/10 in the first innings as Sophie Day picked four wickets while Sutherland returned with three wickets under her belt. In response, Melbourne Stars registered a 6-wicket victory on the back of Annabel Sutherland's 42 in 48 deliveries.
The 21-year-old Sutherland was awarded Player of the Match award for her brilliant batting against Melbourne Renegades. Speaking of Jemimah Rodrigues, Indian batters joined the likes of Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur and many other Indian women cricketer to heap praise on the BCCI for announcing equal pay for women cricketers as compared to their male counterparts.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah made this big announcement on Thursday as he tweeted, "I’m pleased to announce BCCI ’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing pay equity policy for our contracted @BCCIWomen cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Cricket." Responding to the development, Rodrigues wrote, "How good is this for Women's Cricket in India."
