India is hosting England in the fourth Test of the five-match series at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. After being invited to bowl first, the Men in Blue had a dream start with Test debutant Akash Deep scalping three wickets in the opening hour. But with Joe Root taking the field, he stitched a crucial partnership with wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes to help the team put some runs.
While he reached his first half-century in the ongoing series in the 49th over, he completed his hundred in the 84th over. The England batter smashed through the covers on the final delivery of the 84th over for a boundary and soon afterwards, removed his helmet and kissed on the badge on it.
Not only this, England skipper Ben Stokes, who departed early having scored only three runs, showed his little finger from the pavilion as he celebrated his teammates well-deserved century. Root also reciprocated, signalling the same gesture.
While this century from Root was his third slowest by balls faced (219 balls), he went on to smash most Test tons against India, surpassing Steven Smith (9).
At that moment, the England scoreboard read 279/7 after 84 overs with Root (103) and Ollie Robinson (12) in middle.
