Kavya Maran, the CEO of SunRisers Hyderabad, was spotted on camera, jumping for joy after her team pulled off a famous win by one run against Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. She and the entire Orange Army present at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium saw Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowl an impressive last over, defending two runs off the final ball against a rampaging Rovman Powell.
For the unversed, after winning the toss, the captain of SRH, Pat Cummins, decided to bat first, but the RR bowlers picked up a couple of early wickets and kept the lid on the scoring to put them on the back foot. After the first eight overs, the hosts were just 48/2, struggling for answers, but Travis Head turned the momentum in their favour by taking down Yuzvendra Chahal before completing yet another IPL fifty. Nitish Kumar Reddy, one of the brightest young prospects in Indian cricket, took control of the innings from this point onwards, scoring a fantastic 76 not out off just 42 balls with three fours and eight maximums. Heinrich Klaasen got into the act later in the innings, blitzing to 42 off 19, to propel SRH to 201/3.
SRH's Bhuvneshwar Kumar becomes player of the match against RR in IPL 2024
In the run chase, Bhuvneshwar Kumar took out two of the in-form batters for Rajasthan Royals, Jos Buttler and the captain Sanju Samson, who didn’t trouble the scorers. But then, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag put together a sensational partnership of 134 runs, competing in their respective fifties, to put RR in a commanding position.
Shortly after their partnership was broken, SRH got back into the game with quick wickets, dragging the contest to the final over with RR needing 13 to win. Although Rovman Powell brought the equation down to two off one against Bhuvneshwar Kumar, he got trapped in front of the wicket on a full toss, kick-starting wild celebrations among the SRH players and fans inside the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
With this famous win, Sunrisers Hyderabad leapfrogged Chennai Super Kings on the IPL 2024 points table, to find themselves in fourth place with six wins and four losses in their 10 matches in the tournament.
