Inter Miami claimed their first-ever MLS Supporters' Shield with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Columbus Crew thanks to the outstanding performance of Argentine superstar Lionel Messi at the Lower.com Field in Columbus. The 37-year-old scored twice in the first half, helping Miami secure the top spot in the regular Major League Soccer (MLS) season standings in the Eastern Conference.

Lionel Messi started strong by scoring the first goal with a smart chip over the Columbus goalkeeper. Just before halftime, he scored again with a beautiful free-kick from 24 yards, giving Miami a 2-0 lead. These goals brought Messi’s tally to 17 goals in the last 17 MLS matches.  Columbus fought back after halftime when Diego Rossi scored, making it 2-1. But Miami’s Luis Suarez quickly responded, scoring after a defensive mistake by Columbus. His 18th goal of the season restored Miami’s two-goal lead at 3-1.

The game got even more intense when Columbus got a penalty, and Cucho Hernandez scored to make the score 3-2. Minutes later, Columbus got another penalty. It looked like they might tie the contest, but Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender made an important save to keep Miami in the lead.  This victory not only gave Miami the Supporters' Shield but also extended their undefeated run to nine games. Miami now has a chance to break the MLS scoring record in a season, needing two more wins to surpass the 73 points set by the New England Revolution in 2021.

After the match, Messi said, "We’ve achieved our first goal by finishing at the top, but now we need to focus on the playoffs. Playing at home is a big advantage, and we are very strong there."  This win adds another trophy to Messi’s remarkable career, marking his 46th title with clubs and his national team. With the playoffs coming up, Miami will look to continue their strong form and go for a big win.
