NBA commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that the seven-time NBA champions Golden State Warriors will have a WNBA expansion team. Silver announced that the team will begin to play in the 2025 season. Earlier, in October 2023, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced that the team would be the first new franchise to join the league since 2008. As per the earlier announcement, the new team will be owned and operated by Warriors Co-Executive Chairman and CEO Joe Lacob.
The team will play its home game at Chase Center in San Francisco and will have headquarters at the Golden State’s Oakland Facility, which was the Warriors’ practice facility from 1997 to 2019. In a video posted on WNBA Golden State’s social media handle, Silver could be heard saying, “I am so excited that a WNBA team is finally coming to the Bay Area run by the great Warriors organisation.”
