The Indian opening batter Prithvi Shaw was involved in a bizarre hit-wicket dismissal on August 4, Friday, while playing for Northamptonshire against Gloucestershire in the Metro Bank One Day Cup 2023. The 23-year-old had signed for the cricket club in the footsteps of Bishan Singh Bedi, Sourav Ganguly, and Anil Kumble.
At the College Ground in Cheltenham, Prithvi Shaw started quite well for the hosts during the run chase of 279. He went on to score a quick-fire 34 of 35 balls with two fours and a six, while five of the top-order wickets tumbled around him for just 30 runs.

Then, on the last ball of the 16th over, the Thane-born got a brutal bouncer from Paul van Meekeren, on which he couldn’t lay his bat, got unbalanced, and kicked his stumps while falling down in the middle of the pitch. The disappointing fall of the wicket for Northamptonshire dashed their hopes of making a match out of the hopeless situation.
Gloucestershire shared the video of the moment on their official Twitter account, captioning, “HIT WICKET!!!! Paul van Meekeren with a fierce bumper that wipes out Prithvi Shaw who kicks his stumps on the way down. What a delivery! Shaw goes for 34. Northants 54/6.”

Prithvi Shaw, who has struggled for form and consistency with the bat, especially during the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, went to England to revive his cricketing career with an eye on future reselection in the national team. The aforementioned dismissal won’t be ideal in his quest to force the issue amongst the national selectors, but he will have more opportunities to prove his doubters wrong one more time in the ongoing Metro Bank One Day Cup 2023.
