Rohit Sharma-led India took on Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the three-match series in Guwahati. Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and invited India to bat first. But Shanaka’s decision did not augur well for Sri Lanka as the Indian opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill stitched a century partnership. Nothing seemed to go Sri Lanka’s way as both batters survived close calls with the third umpire going with the on-field umpire’s call.
While Sharma survived an LBW call against Wanindu Hasaranga, Shubman Gill got a reprieve against left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage. As Gill got hit on his pad while trying to defend the ball, Sri Lanka went all in with their appeal. With the on-field umpire adjudging the batter not out, Dasun Shanaka opted for a review. It looked plumb and Sri Lanka were ready to celebrate.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli was also ready to come to the crease. However, there was a twist in the tale. While everything went against Shubman Gill, the point of impact between the pad and the ball saved the batter. It showed on the replays as Umpire’s call and hence the batter survived. Sri Lanka were disappointed and shocked to see this. Meanwhile, Kohli also could not believe how Gill survived.
