After featuring for the English national team after almost two and a half years since 26 September 2022, Chelsea right-back Reece James is back with a bang as he scored his first international goal with a stunning free-kick in England’s latest victory against Latvia in the World Cup Qualifiers on March 25, 2025 at the Wembley Stadium. Managed by ex-Chelsea gaffer, Thomas Tuchel, the England team has won both of their World Cup qualifier matches over the last four days, against Albania and Latvia. Reece James, who has played under Tuchel previously at Chelsea, opened the scoring for England in the latest match with a sumptuous free-kick goal.
James has struggled with injuries this season as he has missed 22 games for his club. However, he will hope that his solid performance with the national team will be enough to help him get up and running with Chelsea as well post this international break. He has good relations with the current England coach, Thomas Tuchel, as he has played 74 games under the German tactician. Tuchel led Chelsea to the 2021 UEFA Champions League title and has also won the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup with the club.
England defeat Latvia by 3-0 scoreline to mark Tuchel's second win with the national team
Talking about the match, Reece James opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a stunning 25-yard free-kick, marking his first international goal. Captain Harry Kane doubled the lead in the 68th minute, converting a close-range finish after an assist from Declan Rice. Substitute Eberechi Eze sealed the win in the 76th minute with a deflected solo effort, also his first goal for the national team.
Despite the comfortable scoreline, England faced periods of frustration against a resilient Latvian defense. The team dominated possession and registered numerous goal attempts but struggled to convert opportunities in the first half. Under new head coach Thomas Tuchel, England has now secured two consecutive wins in their qualifying campaign, following a 2-0 victory over Albania.
