Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant issued an apology to fast bowler Mohammed Siraj during the first Test against Bangladesh. On Day 2 of the first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Siraj was visibly in anger when he was denied the wicket of Bangladeshi opener Zakir Hasan. Notably, India was bowled out for 376 early on Day 2 after R Ashwin scored 113 runs and Ravindra Jadeja scored 86 runs.
Rohit Sharma and Co. got off to a favourable start as Jasprit Bumrah scalped Shadman Islam in the first over itself. On fifth ball of the his second over, Siraj bowled a brilliant swinger to Zakir Hasan as the ball crashed on to his pads from over the wicket. Siraj was already celebrating and he appealed for an LBW dismissal. However, it seemed that the umpire Rod Tucker wasn’t interested in the appeal and signalled for not out.
Rishabh Pant apologises to Mohammed Siraj after being denied wicket
After Siraj’s appeal, skipper Rohit Sharma consulted with Rishabh Pant behind the stumps whether DRS should be taken or not. However, the wicketkeeper reckoned that the ball might be crashing down the leg side and said, "Height nahi hain, nikal jayege leg-side (There’s no height but the ball will be crashing down leg), on the stumping mic. After listening to Pant, Sharma didn’t go for the review and the review later showed the tracking of the ball.
In the review, the ball could be seen crashing into the leg stump which left Siraj livid. After his reaction, Rohit was seen smiling and Pant put up his hand in a gesture to apologise to the bowler. By the time of writing, Bangladesh were batting at 112-8 and trailed India by 264 runs.
