The Rohit Sharma-led Team India finally ended their ICC trophy drought as they lifted the T20 World Cup 2024 title on Saturday, June 29 in Barbados. Team India under the leadership of Rohit Sharma registered seven-run win over South Africa at the Kensington Oval in Barbados to lift the title after 11 long years.
Soon after this triumph, there were emotions pouring out on the field as skipper Rohit Sharma, batting stalwart Virat Kohli, along with the likes of Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and others were seen in tears. In another instance, Rohit Sharma, who later announced retirement from T20Is, decided to make the moment even more memorable as he was seen eating some sand from the Barbados pitch, where India won the final.
In the video shared by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the 36-year-old can be seen picking a bit of sand from the pitch and captioned it, “One for the memories.”

Rohit Sharma retires from T20Is; to continue to lead India in Tests and ODIs
The 2024 World Cup winning captain, Rohit Sharma, joined the likes of Virat Kohli to announce his retirement from the shortest format of the game. Speaking after India’s 7-run win over South Africa in Barbados in the summit clash of the T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit announced his retirement from T20 Internationals.
Meanwhile, he confirmed to continue leading the side in Tests as well as ODIs. “This was my last game as well. No better time to say goodbye. I wanted this (trophy) badly. It’s hard to put in words,” Rohit Sharma said at the post-match press conference. “This what I wanted and it happened. I was very desperate for this in my life. Happy that we crossed the line this time,” he added.
The 36-year-old cricketer ends his T20I career having played 159 matches where he has amassed 4231 runs at a strike rate of 140.89 and an average of 32.05. As captain, Rohit has played 62 matches, winning 49 of them.
