Ryan Garcia missed weight for his upcoming boxing match by 3.2 pounds, losing a $1.5 million bet to his opponent Devin Haney after they had agreed to owe the other $500k for weighing every pound over the 140-pound limit. With that, he also relinquished his chance to compete for the WBC World Super Lightweight Championship.
After weighing in at 143.2 pounds behind closed doors, Ryan Garcia also made an appearance at the ceremonial weigh-in open to the public later on. Before stepping on the scale, the American professional boxer seemingly guzzled a beer, sharing the video of the moment on his official X account, calling it worth it.
Shortly after, in another post on the X platform, Ryan Garcia revealed that he had “Apple Juice and sparkling water HEHE,” during the ceremonial weigh-in.
Moreover, Devin Haney had no dramas during the pre-fight weigh-in, making the 140-pound weight limit, and becoming richer by $1.5 million due to Ryan Garcia’s shortcomings. The WBC World Super Lightweight Champion went on to inform that “Ryan honored the 500k per pound,” bet from the day before.
All in all, the boxing match between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia will go ahead as planned at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday, April 20. But, if Haney loses, then his WBC World Super Lightweight Championship will stand vacant, since Garcia can’t officially compete for it, due to exceeding the weight limit at the weigh-in.
