The USA played in the CONCACAF Nations League as they locked horns with Trinidad and Tobago in the second leg of the quarterfinal. While many of his teammates tried to pull Dest away, the footballer threw himself back into the situation. He continued gesturing towards the referee and continued shouting at him. The official was quick to pull the yellow card back, forcing the player to walk off the field. While walking off some players gave him an earful, including Tim Ream. Captain Tim Ream accuses Dest of having no respect for teammates
The USA team captain Tim Ream along with coach Greg Berhalter accused the 23-year-old of having no respect towards his teammates. Ream said, “It's a complete lack of respect for the guys that are playing, for the guys that are on the bench. It's a lack of respect for the game itself, for the referees.” On the other hand, Brehalter said, “As a team, the players, the staff, we need to hold him accountable because it's inexcusable. It really is. And we were very firm with our words after the game.”
The PSV footballer then took to Instagram to apologise for his behaviour on the field. He said, "I want to apologise to my teammates, staff, fans, and the whole nation for my behaviour. It was unacceptable, Selfish, and immature. I let my team down! It's something I have to learn from and it won't happen again!”
