India’s star youngster Tilak Varma recently received his maiden call-up to the Indian team for the five-match T20I series against West Indies in the Caribbean. He was given the ticket to the Indian team after two amazing seasons for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. On Thursday, he made his international debut in the first T20I held in Trinidad.
Tilak walked into bat, for the first time in Indian colours in the fifth over, after Ishan Kishan was dismissed for just six runs by Obed McCoy. Tilak joined his Mumbai Indians teammate Surya Kumar Yadav in the middle when the scorecard displayed 28/2. Obed McCoy bowled him the first ball, which was carefully negotiated by Tilak in the covers for a dot ball. After this, the over ended and SKY was back on strike.
Tilak got back on strike on the third ball of the next over which was being bowled to him by Alzarri Joseph. Joseph bowled a good length, high-speed bullet at 143 kph, angling around the off stump, and Tilak dispatched it for an effortless six over deep-midwicket.
The second ball, was an even faster one, at 146 kph and along the same line, but the length was slightly shorter than the previous delivery. The 20-year-old debutant maintained his cool and pulled this one for a huge six as well, over deep square leg.

Chasing a meager total of 150, Tilak added valuable runs while batting at No.4. He played a quickfire knock of 39(22), which included another six and two fours. Although he was dismissed by Romario Shepherd, he brought India closer to sealing the first game of the series.
Varma had two great IPL seasons, in which he scored an aggregate total of 740 runs in just 25 matches at an average of 38.95. In the 2022 IPL season, which was arguably one of the worst seasons for the Mumbai Indians as a team, Tilak was the biggest positive for the team.
