On Sunday, September 22, India’s veteran off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin etched his name in history books as he equalled late Australian legend, Shane Warne’s record of most five-wicket hauls in Test cricket. The 38-year-old reached this feat at his home ground in Chennai and also became the first player to achieve the feat twice at the same venue, having scored 106 and registering figures of 5/43 against England in Chennai in 2021.
He reached this feat in the 58th over of the final innings of the first Test with Bangladesh’s scoreboard reading 272/6. On the fifth delivery of the 58th over, Ashwin dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz with Ravindra Jadeja completing an easy catch. Soon after this, he became the second player to score a century and take five-fer in same Test most times after Ian Botham (5).
While Ashwin’s all-round performance proved to be vital for the hosts to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, former India captain and batting stalwart, Virat Kohli also did not stay behind to acknowledge Ashwin’s historic feat. After Ashwin’s five-wicket haul, while other players came in to congratulate him, Kohli was seen bowing down to Ashwin, video of which is making rounds on social media.
