England captain Ben Stokes issued clarification after the reports that England team refused to have post-series drinks with the Australian team surfaced. There were strong claims in the Australian media that the visitors were left disappointed after they waited for more than an hour to be invited for customary drinks in the England dressing room after the final Ashes Test. The English skipper refuted all the claims and clarified that their wrap-up got extended due to multiple-last time events.
The Australia-based journalist Bharat Sundaresan had claimed that the Aussies were seen peering into the English dressing room for more than an hour. However, the visitors eventually left the cricket ground around 10:45 when they realised that the post-series customary drink gathering wasn’t happening.
The 32-year-old English captain took to his official Twitter handle to put an end to all the claims and said that the delay took place due to the retirement presentations of Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali. Stokes also said that both the teams had agreed to meet at a nightclub rather than the dressing room.
He tweeted, “To clarify…Our wrap took longer than expected because of multiple last time event’s. We decided to meet up in the night club rather than the dressing room.”
Notably, after trailing the series 2-0, the Three Lions made a remarkable comeback in the series and drew it 2-2. The 2019 World Cup winners secured a 49-run victory over their arch-rivals in the last Test of the series at The Oval on Monday, July 31. It is a tradition that both the teams gather in the dressing rooms following the end of the series for customary drinks.
