Indian tennis ace Manika Batra broke into the top 25 of the world table tennis singles rankings and became the first woman to do so. In the world of wrestling, WFI head  Sanjay Singh announced that the selection trials for the Olympics 2024 will be conducted on June 10.

Manika Batra becomes first Indian woman to break into top-25 of world singles rankings

Indian tennis ace Manika Batra broke into the top 25 of the world table tennis singles rankings and became the first woman to do so. Batra reached a new top in her career after she climbed to world number 24 in the latest ITTF Rankings as announced on Tuesday. Batra soared 15 spots from her previous position at the 39th spot in world rankings. Batra mirrored the achievements of Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, who reached the same rank in 2019 and achieved the highest singles ranking gained by an Indian.

Wrestling trials for Olympics scheduled for June 10: WFI Chief Sanjay Singh

The Wrestling Federation of India chief Sanjay Singh announced that the selection trials for the Olympics 2024 will be conducted on June 10. Five women wrestlers and one male wrestler have secured quota spots; however, the final lineup would be decided after the pending selection trials. Sanjay told The Hindustan Times, “Selection trials will be held on June 10. It will be in the format as given in our policy where a challenger will be selected from the top four eligible wrestlers and there will be three bouts with the quota winner. The quota winner will have to win once while he gets two opportunities if he loses to the challenger.”

I am both excited and nervous about the Paris Olympics: Mirabai Chanu ahead of 2024 Olympics

Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Mirabai Chanu spoke about the upcoming Paris Olympics and said that she would aim to defend, if not better, her silver from the previous edition of the marquee tournament. Chanu told ESPN, "I am both excited and nervous about the Paris Olympics. This will be my third Olympics and the thought of what will happen makes me a little nervous. I had won silver on the first day in Tokyo and thinking about what could happen this time...it adds a little pressure too. But I am thrilled that the Olympics are back within three years and that excites me.”

Camila Giorgi announces retirement from tennis

Tennis star Camila Giorgi confirmed her retirement from the sport with a post on her Instagram. Giorgi is a 2018 Wimbledon quarterfinalist and won four WTA titles in her career. The highest ranking she reached in her career was the 26th spot. On her Instagram, she announced, "I am happy to formally announce retirement from my tennis career. I am so grateful for your wonderful love and support for so many years. I cherish all the beautiful memories. There have been many inaccurate rumours about my future plans, so I look forward to providing more information about exciting opportunities ahead. It is a joy to share my life with you, and let's continue this journey together."

France striker Kylian Mbappe, who recently played his last home game for Paris Saint Germain (PSG) at Parc des Princes was reportedly involved in a heated altercation with the club’s President Nasser Al-Khelaifi ahead of his farewell game, according to the reports by Le Parisien. According to French outlet Le Parisien, the PSG Chief wasn’t happy with the video as the PSG’s highest goal scorer didn’t mention him in the farewell video, which led to screaming and an altercation between the two, before the start of the match. It was Al-Khelaifi who acted from the front to secure Mbappe’s deal in 2018 from AS Monaco for €180 million.

Real Madrid star Eder Militao and fellow Brazilian footballer Leonardo Pereira swapped their girlfriends in a bizarre love story in the footballing world. Pereira is now with Karoline Lima who was with Militao and has a child with him. On the other hand, Taina Castro, Pereira’s ex-girlfriend is now with the Spain-based centre-back, Eder Militao. Militao shared an Instagram story with Taina, where they were playing teqball, soccer, and ping pong. He accompanied the picture with the caption, “My perfect partner”. 

Netizens react as heavy rainfall hits Old Trafford after Man United’s loss to Arsenal

Fans reacted and slammed the Old Trafford Stadium management after the stadium got flooded by heavy rainfall. The football venue’s away dressing room was flooded after the side faced a 0-1 loss to Arsenal in their Premier League clash. Around 1.6 inches of rain fell in the two hours after the final whistle, which was more than the city had in the entire month of May. With the heavy rain, water started cascading from one corner of the ground and the seating area in the stadium got flooded. Several videos from the stadium went viral on social media, where one of the dressing roos had heavy leaks.

Galatasaray become "hard core Swifties" after Taylor Swift's Tour

Turkish football giants Galatasaray announced that they have become Swifties after Taylor Swift’s Paris leg of the Eras Tour. During the 1989 segment of her concert, Swift donned a golden-red outfit, resembling the Turkish football team’s colours. The Turkish giants took to social media and announced that they are now ‘hard-core Swifties”. They posted, “You know we're hard-core Swifties now” The American pop singer performed in the City of Love on Sunday, May 12.
