On Tuesday (2 August), weightlifter Vikas Thakur made it to the news headlines after winning a silver medal in the men’s 96 kg category at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022. He lifted a total weight of 346 kg. His snatch attempt was 155 kg, while the clean & jerk one witnessed him lifting 191 kg.
This is the third consecutive medal of Thakur in CWG history. Hailing from Ludhiana, the talented weightlifter won silver in the men’s 85 kg category of CWG 2014 in Scotland. In CWG 2018 at Gold Coast, the 28-year-old competed in the 94 kg category and won a bronze medal.
Furthermore, Thakur has been a seven times national champion (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 ,2018, 2019 ,2020). He took his initial training in the National Institute of Sports, Patiala. Currently, the experienced weightlifter is employed as a Warrant Officer in the Indian Air Force and posted in Chandigarh.
Thakur has done well in the Commonwealth Championship as well, with five medals to his name. The 2017 and 2021 witnessed him securing a bronze medal. In the 2013 and 2019 editions, he won a silver medal. His only gold medal came in the 2015 edition, which was held at Pune.
