When India defeated Sri Lanka in a low-scoring thriller by 41 runs during the Super Four match in the Asia Cup 2023, they secured their passage to the final of the continental showpiece. This result also led to Bangladesh's elimination from the race to make the grand finale of the Asia Cup 2023, which left only Sri Lanka and Pakistan to slug it out amongst themselves for the coveted spot.

Notably, Sri Lanka are scheduled to play against Pakistan on Thursday, September 14, at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, in the final match of their respective Super Four campaign, with a place in the Asia Cup 2023 final at stake. Both these teams currently have two points from their first two matches, but Sri Lanka (with an NRR of -0.200) are ahead of Pakistan (-1.892), in second place in the standings behind India.

With rains playing a significant part in deciding the outcome of matches during Asia Cup 2023 in the island nation, there are chances of the Sri Lanka versus Pakistan match getting washed out. If so, the team with the better net run rate will play against India in the final of the tournament, wherein Sri Lanka currently have an edge over Pakistan.

In case the virtual semi-final of the Asia Cup 2023 draws to its logical conclusion at the R Premadasa in Colombo, then the winner of the match will have the opportunity to face India in the grand finale. Pakistan, who have been one of the most consistent ODI, teams in recent memory, could script history on September 14, if they beat Sri Lanka to set up the final against their arch-rivals India for the first time in the history of the tournament.
