However, England were handed the first blow in the last hour of the second Test with R Ashwin taking a crucial wicket of Ben Duckett as the scoreboard read 67/1 at Stumps on Day 3. With England still needing more than 300 runs, the Men in Blue were also handed a blow as Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) early on Monday, February 5 informed that Gill will not take the field.
“Shubman Gill hurt his right index finger while fielding on Day 2. He won’t be taking the field today,” BCCI captioned the post.
However, the nature of the injury is not known, it isn’t expected to be a serious one as he batted on Day 3 and went up to end his century drought in the longest format of the game after 12 innings. Moreover, Sarfaraz Khan has taken the field in place of Gill.
Speaking after his crucial ton against England on Day 3, Gill said, “Definitely very pleased but I left a bit out there to be honest. Should’ve just played the 5-6 overs till tea.”
Earlier in the match, the Rohit Sharma-led side won the toss and opted to bat first. The Men in Blue from thereon built on their lead as added 255 runs to put 399 for England to chase. At the time of writing, England were 112/2 after 25 overs.
