After a long meeting between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner, Sanjiv Goenka and wicketkeeper-batter and captain, KL Rahul, the Lucknow-based franchise is set to appoint former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their mentor for IPL 2025. However, the reports around talks between LSG and Khan had emerged earlier this month, the official announcement around the same is set to come on Wednesday, August 28.
Notably, the former India speedster will replace former India cricketer and the current head coach, Gautam Gambhir in the franchise. Moreover, he is set to play an important role with Morne Morkel also leaving the side to assume role as India’s bowling coach. Zaheer Khan’s appointment will mark his return in the IPL setup after his association with five-time champions, Mumbai Indians (MI) from 2018-2022.
“Zaheer has been appointed as team mentor and the unveiling will happen later today,” sources told PTI. If the reports are to be believed, a formal unveiling is scheduled to take place at the RPSG Group Headquarters on Wednesday, August 28.
Zaheer Khan to join head coach Justin Langer and others in LSG
It is to be noted that Zaheer Khan will collaborate with former Australia head coach, Justin Langer and a strong team consisting of Adam Vogues Lance Klusener and Jonty Rhodes among others at Lucknow Super Giants.
Speaking further of the 45-year-old, prior to his coaching career, Zaheer Khan has featured in three IPL teams, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Delhi Daredevils. Over the 10 seasons, Zaheer Khan has appeared in 100 matches, claiming 102 wickets at an economy of 7.58. His final appearance in IPL came in 2017 when he captained Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals).
