Brentford striker Ivan Toney has revealed that he has been helping the E nglish Football Association with their investigation into alleged bets placed by the 26-year-old. Toney expressed that he was “assisting the Football Association with their enquiries” after national newspaper reports alleged he was being investigated for gambling on football.
The FA doesn’t allow its players to bet on the sport and reports say that Toney was involved in betting before he joined the Premier League club. The striker is in contention to be named in England’s World Cup squad after being selected by Gareth Southgate for the last round of Nations League fixtures.
Toney released a statement regarding the issue and expressed that he will not be further commenting on this issue until the investigations are concluded. The statement said, “I’m aware of a story about me in a national newspaper today.”
“I have been assisting the Football Association woh their enquiries and will not be making any comment until such investigation has reached its conclusion. I am a proud Englishman and it has always been my childhood dream to play for my country at a World Cup Finals.”
The English FA has declined to comment on the issue and his club, Brentford had also held a similar stance and said, “We note the story concerning Ivan Toney and the FA investigation. The club will not be commenting.”
Despite being picked for the Three Lions, Toney made an appearance against Italy or Germany, but after scoring eight goals in 13 games so far this season, his place in the England team for Qatar seems to be certain.
Toney was suspended for Brentford’s recent game against Nottingham Forest which ended as a 2-2 draw but will be available for selection in the upcoming League Cup tie against Gillingham and the Bees’ last Premier League game before the World Cup against Manchester City.
