The 2024 season of the Indian Premier League kicked off on March 22, and in the blink of an eye, it has reached its playoff stage. The 17th edition of the tournament gave several entertaining moments to fans. Not only this, but the edition also became a hit for some players, while others were a total miss. A few names couldn’t live up to fans’ and management’s hopes and performed way below expectations.
Flop XI of IPL 2024
In this article, we will go through eleven names who looked very promising at the beginning of the season but failed to make a mark.
Openers: Ajinkya Rahane and Rachin Ravindra
Veteran CSK batter Ajinkya Rahane had a brilliant campaign in the 2023 season of the tournament with 326 runs in 14 matches he played for the side. The 36-year-old was expected to continue his dominance with the bat in 2024 as well; however, Rahane failed to live up to those expectations. He could only come up with 209 runs in 12 games with the highest score of 45 runs at a strike rate of 120.11.
New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra was picked by the reigning champions Chennai Super Kings at the mini auction. Ravindra had a brilliant run at the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 and was expected to come up with the same kind of performance in the cash-rich league. However, the 25-year-old couldn’t deliver decent performances and scored only 161 runs in nine games, and failed to pick any wicket as well.

Middle Order: Aiden Markram, Glenn Maxwell, Hardik Pandya (C)
Former SRH captain Aiden Markram once again failed to impress fans and management with his poor performances. In the nine matches he played, Markram could only score 199 runs with an average of 28.43 and a strike rate of 130.92. On the other hand, Glenn Maxwell who was a hero for his national side in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 failed miserably in IPL 2024. The Aussie could come up with only 36 runs in eight games he played for his IPL franchise.
Other than them, the season saw the return of Hardik Pandya in the MI, and this time as the captain of the franchise. However, Pandya failed to make a mark as a leader, and not only this but his performance as an individual was also affected. Pandya could score only 200 runs in 13 games and picked only 11 wickets with an economy of 10.59.

Lower order: Jitesh Sharma (wk), Rinku Singh
Jitesh Sharma, the vice-captain of the Punjab Kings, had an unsuccessful campaign in the IPL 2024. The 31-year-old could come up with a below-par score of 155 runs with an average of 14.09 in 13 games. Rinku Singh, KKR’s surprise factor in the 2023 season failed to continue the momentum in the 2024 season and scored only 168 runs in 12 games with the highest score of 26 runs at an average of 18.67.

Bowlers: Shardul Thakur, Mitchell Starc, Deepak Chahar, Ravi Bishnoi
Chennai Super Kings’ reliable bowler Shardul Thakur was a complete flop in the 2024 season of the tournament. The 33-year-old could pick only three wickets in eight games with an average of 82.67 and an economy of 8.96. Australia’s fast bowler Mitchell Starc became the most expensive pick in the history of the IPL when KKR roped him in for ₹24.75 Crore at the IPL 2024 mini-auction. Unfortunately, Starc had an absolute disastrous outing in India for the season. Out of 11 matches he played, Starc could only pick 12 wickets, and being the most expensive player, he was expected to do more.
Deepak Chahar who has helped CSK win big games in the past had a terrible campaign and was a total flop for the side. Chahar struggled with injury throughout the season and in eight games he played, the 32-year-old could pick up only five wickets. Lucknow Super Giants spinner Ravi Bishnoi also joined the list of biggest flops in the 2024 season as he could only pick eight wickets in 13 games.
