Lionel Messi once again turns up for Argentina! The 35-year-old opened the scoring for Argentina as he scored from the spot to put Argentina ahead in the game. In the 32nd minute, Alvarez got fouled by Croatia’s goalkeeper and the penalty was given. Messi, who missed the penalty against Poland, didn’t miss out this time as he scored his fifth goal of the tournament.

With the goal, Messi surpassed Gabriel Batistuta to become Argentina’s all-time leading goal scorer. The Argentine now has 11 goals in the World Cup. The penalty also meant that Messi is now also the joint-top scorer in Qatar with Kylian Mbappe (5). The celebration for Argentina fans didn’t stop there as youngster Julian Alvarez scored a brilliant goal in the 39th minute to give his side a 2-0 lead.
