Spanish driver, Sainz displayed terrific teamwork to help Leclerc get extra pace, which helped him to outpace Verstappen by three-tenths of a second. It was Leclerc’s 16th pole position in his career and his first at the French Grand Prix. Sainz has sustained a penalty for changing his hybrid system, which will see him starting the race from the back of the grid at Circuit Paul Ricard.

The 27-year-old hoped that Leclerc would continue his dominance at French GP 2022 on Sunday (24 July). He added that the team has a good atmosphere, which is a key factor in a bid to help each other.

"I've been very quick here all weekend, so I feel a sense of a bit of frustration personally," said Sainz.

"But I am happy that Charles has pole position. He will have to fight with Max at the start, but I believe he can do it – it's all about nailing the start.”

Today shows that we are a very solid team. There is a good atmosphere in our team and we are all willing to help each other,” added Sainz.

Leclerc lauds the effort of Sainz

"He did the perfect job and his tow helped me a lot – I gained two-tenths there on that straight so in the final sector I had a great mindset. It was a great job by Carlos," Leclerc said.

Monegasque driver feels it will be a very close battle with Red Bull Driver Verstappen for winning the French GP. Leclerc and Verstappen will be on the front row for the sixth occasion in 2022 on Sunday.

"We have higher downforce and that may be good for tyre management, but they are very quick on the straights and it is very difficult to follow here," said Leclerc.

"Two different approaches. Only time will tell. Let's see which compromise works the best tomorrow," added Leclerc.
