Indian opening batter and skipper Rohit Sharma created history on Thursday as he became the leading run-scorer in T20 Internationals. After completing his 37th run with a single in the eighth over against Jeffrey Vandersay in the 1st T20I against Sri Lanka, the Hitman crossed this milestone. Sharma leapfrogged fellow teammate Virat Kohli’s 3296 runs and also crossed Martin Guptil’s total of 3299 runs in 123 games. 

The 35-year-old made his T20 international debut against England in a historical game, where Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes against Stuart Broad in the 2007 T20 World Cup in Kingsmead, South Africa. He scored six runs off four balls before being dismissed by Chris Tremlett. Then after some up and down years, Rohit finally made his mark in the 2011 Indian Premier League, where he scored 372 runs at an average of 33.81 and a strike rate of 125.25.

After an incredible IPL, Sharma was called up for the Indian ODI squad. But once again, he failed to establish himself in the team with a string of below-par performances. Finally, in 2013, Captain Cool decided to promote Sharma at opener’s spot, which single-handedly turned the fortunes of Indian cricket. Rohit first opened against England, scoring a solid 83 and played a vital role as the team chased down 257. After that, it was the start of the Hitman Show as the opening partnership of Rohit and Shikar Dhawan lit up the Champions Trophy, which was followed by a thunderous showing against Australia. Soon the Hitman also made his Test debut, where he scored two centuries against the West Indies in his maiden series. Meanwhile, he also became the skipper of the Mumbai Indians and led the Mumbai franchise to their maiden title in 2013. Ever since then, Rohit Sharma has been one of the top batters in the world.  He has records like scoring three double centuries in One Day Internationals, setting the score 264 as the highest score in 50-over cricket and becoming the first IPL captain to win five trophies in IPL history.
