According to recent reports, the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will feature 10 teams. With earlier reports stating that 10 teams will feature in the forthcoming 14th edition of the cash-rich league, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) clarified on IPL 2021 to be a 8-team affair.

However, the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to get underway from April 9. Defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) will lock horns against Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the season opener in Chennai.

Two teams to be auctioned in May 2021

Recent meeting led by BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah on March 13 discussed several policies ahead of the forthcoming edition of IPL. On being asked about the 10-team tournament, a senior BCCI source was quoted as saying to Times Now, “The 10 team IPL will roll on from next year and the bidding process and finalisation of the new franchises will be completed by the month of May this year. Once the teams are finalised, they can start their operational work which takes considerable time.”

Notably, the Indian Premier League was once a 10-team event. The 2011 edition of the cash-rich league had 10 teams with Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors being the other two teams than the one currently present.
