During his acceptance speech, Murray humorously acknowledged Jon Jones, the UFC Heavyweight Champion, who was also a nominee for the award and joked with Jones that they could share the award.

Murray's outstanding displays in his first season following an ACL surgery were truly remarkable. Although his performance during the regular season raised concerns among fans and critics, his playoff statistics (26.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 7.1 assists) demonstrated his place among the elite guards worldwide. This is why the player edged out Jones, who many consider to be among the greatest fighters in MMA history.
During his acceptance speech, Murray acknowledged the other contenders for the award and joked with Jones after winning the prize, saying: "I was actually there to watch you witness a comeback three years off. So we can share this together, just don't choke me out."
